How to Save Electricity this Winter

Date : 21 April 2015

With winter fast approaching, it’s standard that most of us consume more electricity as the days and nights get colder and darker.

By the time we get home from work in winter, it’s already dark – meaning we end up using the lights for a lot longer than in the summer months. Heaters and electric blankets get switched on, we take hotter and deeper baths, we use the oven to cook warm food such as roasts a lot more often – this all results in a much higher electricity bill than usual.

Did you know that there are ways to save your electricity costs in very easy and inexpensive ways? When it comes to your lighting, for example, saving can be as easy as switching to CFL bulbs. Best of all, this actually saves you electricity costs all year round. Let’s take a look at why having CFL bulbs will is important and how they’ll benefit you in the long run.

The Benefits of Switching to CFL Bulbs

CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lights, as they are really just smaller versions of your standard fluorescent lighting. However, there are plenty of ways that you can benefits from using these instead. Switching to them may seem a little costly upfront, but in the long run you will end up saving a lot more money on electricity, as well as be helping the environment.

One of the most noticeable benefits of switching to CFL light bulbs is the fact that they can last up to ten times longer than regular bulbs and they use up to 75% less energy – which will really help you to cut down on those costs this winter. Despite them using a lot less energy, they still burn bright. In fact, they give your home a nice warm glow (perfect for winter), rather than a harsh white light.

Another great benefit is that by using CFL bulbs, you are contributing to helping our environment by slowly reducing the carbon footprint. In the past 20-odd years, the world has become more aware of saving the environment and at Eveready, we do all we can to make a difference. CLF bulbs can also be recycled, which is another huge plus. If you’re not sure where to drop them, feel free to bring them to Eveready, where we will take care of the recycling for you.

A Few Extra Tips on Saving Electricity

As mentioned above, winter brings on the freezing cold nights and some days where it’s dark already at 4pm – resulting in us using a lot more electricity in a bid to get warm. We already covered how you can save your lighting costs, so here are a few extra tips on how to save on electricity costs this winter, from when you leave for work to when you go to sleep:

  • Make sure to leave your curtains open in the morning before you leave for work, especially on sunny days. When you get home in the early evening, shut your curtains for the night so that it traps the heat from the day in your lounge and rooms.
  • When you get home, try to fit in a brisk exercise – even if it’s only for ten minutes. It will keep you warm while you cook dinner and get the kids ready for bed.
  • If you have a fireplace, use it! Make like our ancestors and keep warm in front of a fire – not only does this save you electricity, but wood also provides more heat than what a heater does.
  • If you’re sitting in the lounge, for example, make sure to shut all the other doors in the house of rooms that aren’t being used. This way, you get to trap the heat and keep it in one area.
  • When you go bed at night, we all know how bitterly cold some of those winter nights can be. But, instead of using your electric blanket, why not invest in a hot water bottle? Holding it against your tummy will provide you with instant warmth and allow you to drift off to sleep – and save money.
