Date : 11 July 2016

At Eveready we are always looking for new ways to reduce our carbon footprint, as we strive to be an even ‘greener’ organisation.

One fantastic ‘Bright Idea’ we felt our customers could do to help recycle and to minimise their waste, is by upcycling their old light bulbs.

This new and exciting trend is a great way to not only make you feel good about recycling, but also is a fun and exciting way to use your creativity to personalise your home décor in a very innovative and unique way.

We have put together an easy to use step by step guide on firstly, how to Hollow out your old light bulbs. And secondly, a few fun ideas and images on how you can transform an old light bulb into a piece of artwork for your home.

How to Hollow out old light bulbs:

First things first, and the tricky part is to hollow out your old light bulbs. The first few times it might feel slow, but the more you do it, the easier it will become.

What you will need:

  • Light bulb
  • Hammer
  • Pliers
  • Small screw driver

The Process:

  1. Firstly, you need to take your light bulb and remove the brass top by using your pliers.
  2. Secondly, you will need to remove the black part of the bulb which is glass. You can do this by carefully inserting the small screw driver into the black hole to break the black glass. You can also place the bulb on the side and hit the black glass lightly, which will result in it shattering into many tiny pieces. (please note that this project must only be done by adults, who should wear protective eye wear and gloves).
  3. You will then need to remove the tube inside by inserting the small screw driver to break the glass tube.
  4. Lastly, you will need to place the light bulb upside down to make sure all the remaining glass has come out of the bulb.
  5. If you would like to use the bulbs as hanging planters, you will then need to drill a hole through the silver part of the bulb to insert your string.

Once you have hollowed out your old light bulbs, there are numerous ways to reuse them. From beautiful hanging light bulb planters, light bulb candles to light bulb spices. The possibilities are endless!
